Australian Live Sheep Exports Increase in May

AUSTRALIA - Australian live sheep exports in May reached 248,745 head, one per cent higher than May 2013, while the fiscal year-to-May eased by one per cent to 1.88 million head, according to figures from Meat and Livestock Australia.

Qatar received the most live sheep for the month, at 70,000 head (up 27 per cent year-on-year), while the July-to-May figure remained 6 per cent lower year-on-year, at 496,897 head.

Live sheep shipments to Jordan declined 34 per cent in May, to 59,052, with the current fiscal year 24 per cent lower, at 262,260 head, while exports to Bahrain totalled 50,225 head, carrying the eleven-month fiscal period to 75,225 head (up 21 per cent).

Aggregate shipments to Israel were up 34 per cent on May 2013, at 37,000 head, with the fiscal year at 83,283 head, up 12 per cent year-on-year.

In May, total live goat exports reached 8,612 head, more than double last year’s level, with the July-to-May period up 35 per cent year-on-year, totalling 74,978 head.

The bulk of live goats were exported to Malaysia, at 8,446 head, more than triple the previous year, while the current fiscal year reached 54,636 head (up 3 per cent).

Volumes to the UAE totalled 122 head, with 921 head for the fiscal period (significantly higher than the previous year) while there were 44 goats sent to Thailand in May.
