Mutton to Get Valentine's Boost

11 February 2015

UK - A national scheme to boost mutton consumption has chosen valentine's day as the launch pad for mutton week.

Craft butcher Salter and King is behind the initiative, with support from the National Sheep Association (NSA) and considers mutton "a very underrated and healthy meat".

Mutton week, to be launched on Saturday 14 February, includes recipes and cooking and butchery demonstrations as well as a mutton "taste-off" between two hotels. The White Lion and the Brudenell compete to see who is judged to have the best mutton dish.

In a statement, the NSA said: "NSA is committed to the promotion of quality mutton through an extension of the work of the Mutton Renaissance Club, an initiative of HRH The Prince of Wales, with sponsorship from Eblex, HCC, and LMSNI.

"The renewed work will assist producers, processors and retailers in making quality mutton once again available to all, as it was as recently as 80 years ago."
