Bluetongue Outbreaks Continue in France

05 May 2016

FRANCE - A large number of further outbreaks of Bluetongue have been reported in France in the last month.

The country has been struggling to contain the disease since outbreaks began to be detected in August last year, and the disease was confirmed in September.

In the latest five reports from France to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), 58 cases were reported in cattle and one case in a goat, in a total of 41 separate outbreaks.

The cases were mainly identified through sampling and surveillance, rather than through the animals showing clinical signs.

The outbreaks occurred across central France.

The French authorities are using a vaccination strategy in response to the outbreaks, along with movement controls, sceening, surveillance and control of vectors.
