Rams Sought for RamCompare Programme

UK – The UK sheep industry is looking for eight rams to breed in a two year genetics programme to boost the industry’s stock.

The RamCompare project sets out to follow progeny from six commercial farms to abattoirs, with rams being currently selected for the artificial insemination section of the project. read more

Two Texel, two Charollais, two Suffolk and a Meatlinc and a Hampshire down are required for year one.

“Many of the potential AI rams have been identified,” said project organiser, EBLEX. “Semen that has already been collected from widely used sires is being used where possible, but some rams are being sent for semen collection”.

The EBLEX trial is similar tests are underway in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand which aim to combine performance data in genetic evaluations.

The rams must be performance recorded, in the top 20 per cent of  their breed, available from July 2015, be from a flock with good linkage to other flock and have a good health status.
