Australian Lamb Prices Steady, Wednesday

30 April 2015

AUSTRALIA – Lamb prices saw some upward movement in restocker classes yesterday but slipped slightly elsewhere.

Australia’s Eastern States Indicators showed a 2 cent lift in restockers at 531 c per kilo.

Merino lambs were unchanged on 501 cents per kilo, while light lambs declined one cent on 536 cents per kilo per hundredweight.

Heavier classes were back two cents and mutton eased one cent to 397 cents per kilo hundredweight.

At Hamilton, lamb throughput was 6 per cent lower, at 10,941 head, and quality was very good. There was some restocker buyer activity, reports Meat and Livestock Australia.

Light weight 2 score lambs eased 2¢ on 570¢, while 3 score trade weight lambs increased 6¢ on 577¢/kg cwt.

MLA market analysts reported that heavy weight 4 score lambs declined 12¢ on 540¢, while extra heavy 4 score lambs fell 7¢ on 530¢/kg cwt.

There were 34 per cent more sheep penned, totalling 8,511 head, and despite the plainer yarding, the market trended dearer overall. Medium weight 2 score Merino ewes lifted 9¢ and averaged 394¢/kg cwt.
