Liveweight lamb prices rise again
Lamb prices continued to climb this week, despite an increase in throughputs, potentially because rising prices have encouraged more producers to market their lambs. During week ended 2 November, the GB SQQ rose 2p on the previous week to reach 166.2p/kg. This price is in line with month earlier figures, and almost 20p higher than the same point last year.
The start of this week was key to driving the price increase, with the SQQ showing a 7p rise on the week on Thursday 27 October. However, this turned to a decrease on the week by the following Wednesday, with prices on Wednesday 2 November down by 4p on the week at 162.8p/kg. The weak pound is likely continuing to buoy demand for UK lamb, supporting the price even though slaughter numbers have been up.
