Sharp falls seen in liveweight market
Liveweight lamb prices have seen sharp falls in the past week as the number of new season lambs coming to market continues to increase.
In the week ended 18 May, the old season GB SQQ has fallen by 14p compared to a week earlier at 168.1p/kg, the largest weekly fall since June 2015. However, due to similar falls seen at this time last year, prices remained a fifth of a penny above the levels seen in 2015. Prices normally decline at this time of year, with large falls also reported during the equivalent week in 2015. This happens as the season begins to switch over, with higher numbers of new season lambs coming to the market lead to prices of both new and old season lambs falling. The largest falls were seen towards the end of the period, with the old season GB SQQ on Wednesday 19 May falling 23p to 157.9p/kg.
