AHDB Cattle and Sheep Weekly
28 December 2015
In this issue: fewer slaughter age cattle on the ground, and total sheep farming returns only slightly down in 2015.
AHDB forecasts for this year have consistently indicated that 2015 would be a year of lower prime cattle availability and in the year to November, prime cattle slaughterings were back almost three per cent on the year.
However, for much of the year so far developments in farmgate prices have not appeared to reflect this position. As the end of the year approaches, it is worth taking a look at what supplies on the ground look like, as this will be a factor of developments in the trade in the New Year.
This year has also been a particularly bad one for lamb prices. High levels of production and difficult export conditions have led prices for lambs in some months to be at their lowest level for a number of years.
However, there are some positives that can be taken though when looking at the returns per carcase. The situation for some producers may not have been as bad as prices alone suggest. Read more detailed analysis on this on page 6.
