Lamb trade at auction marts eases
Following a period of improved prices the liveweight lamb trade at GB auction marts eased modestly in week ended 9 December.
At 161.2p/kg the SQQ was back just over a penny on the week earlier. After a more robust start to the week in which the SQQ averaged 165.5p/kg on Monday 7 December trade has been more subdued as the week has progressed. It is likely that one of the key drivers of the stronger prices last week will have been the many Christmas shows and sales taking place at this time of year. Consequently with these sales coming to an end week-on-week comparisons could be somewhat misleading. Demand has, in fact, reported to have continued to fair better. At 160,000 head, the number of lambs penned nationally increased 15 per cent on last week, which may just have helped to tip the supply-demand balance more in processors favour.
