International Trade Highlights:

World Duck Meat Situation

PRODUCTION: World production of indigenous duck meat totaled 4,367,273 metric tons (MT) in 2013, up 1% from 2012 (4,333,604 MT), up 4% from 2011 (4,183,474 MT), up 8% from 2010 (4,031,386 MT), and up 12% from 2009 (3,903,224 MT). Furthermore, a total of 2,885,610 thousand head of indigenous ducks were produced worldwide in 2013, 1% lower than 2012 (2,922,238 thousand head), 4% higher than 2011 (2,781,490 thousand head), 8% higher than 2010 (2,678,262 thousand head), and 11% higher than 2009 (2,590,201 thousand head).

China continues to lead the world in production of duck meat in 2013. In 2013, China produced a total of 2,922,250 MT of duck meat, 1% higher than 2012 (2,885,046 MT), 7% higher than 2011 (2,733,932 MT), 10% higher than 2010 (2,649,960 MT), and 15% higher than 2009 (2,551,860 MT). Behind China in duck meat production was France (280,400 MT), Malaysia (129,548 MT), Myanmar (107,030 MT), Vietnam (102,480 MT), Thailand (89,897 MT), Egypt (71,490 MT), Republic of Korea (69,362 MT), Taiwan (63,980 MT), and Hungary (59,627 MT). Based on statistical data from the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the US jumped up one ranking from 2012 to 11th in the world in the production of duck meat in 2013 with 56,380 MT, up 2% from 2012 (55,700 MT), up 1% from 2011 (56,300 MT), up 5% from 2010 (54,050 MT), and up 10% from 2009 (51,850 MT).

TRADE: In 2012, total world exports of duck meat in 2012 reached 205,524 MT, up 30% from 2011 (158,561 MT), up 36% from 2010 (151,130 MT), and up 63% from 2009 (126,471 MT). The leading exporter of duck meat in the world was France at 36,812 MT in 2012, 294% higher than 2011 (9,332 MT), 288% higher than 2010 (9,491 MT), and 258% higher than 2009 (10,288 MT). Following France was China (34,760 MT), Hungary (34,313 MT), Germany (23,904 MT), Netherlands (18,147 MT), Hong Kong (11,827 MT), Bulgaria (7,794 MT), Republic of Korea (7,768 MT), US (4,474 MT), and Brazil (3,025 MT). The US ranked 9th worldwide in 2012.

Worldwide duck meat imports totaled 138,212 MT in 2012, up 1% from 2011 (137,253 MT), down 10% from 2010 (153,211 MT), and up 12% from 2009 (123,293 MT). Germany led the world in imports of duck meat imports at 29,514 MT, 82% higher than 2011 (16,232 MT), 69% higher than 2010 (17,452 MT), and 101% higher than 2009 (14,676 MT). Behind Germany was Hong Kong (14,982 MT), France (12,895 MT), Czech Republic (11,571 MT), Denmark (6,976 MT), Russia (6,036 MT), Spain (5,446 MT), Belgium (4,798 MT), Austria (4,345 MT), and Japan (3,833 MT). The US ranked 17st worldwide in 2012 at 1,940 MT.
