Austrian Dairy Sheep Numbers and Production Higher

05 March 2015

AUSTRIA – Sheep dairying is on the rise in Austria, according to results from an industry survey.

Dairy sheep numbers increased by about a third in 2014, with four new operations commencing production, taking the dairy flock to 1,245 head.

This pushed milk production higher and components have followed suit, said the Agricultural Chamber of Upper Austria. Their figures show there are 324 more sheep on a total of 19 farms.

Dairy-goat numbers have increased slightly, although farms have decreased. A total of 47 companies runs 5,158 animals at an average of 109.7 head, said the Chamber.

Goat milk production dropped in 2014 but fat and protein increased.
