Gavin Hill Receives SRUC Award

14 July 2014

SCOTLAND - Gavin Hill, Assistant Regional Manager for SAC Consulting, is the latest recipient of the RC Stewart Prize.

Gavin, from Biggar, will recieve the award for his work and dedication to the beef and sheep industries in the UK and specifically Scotland. The annual prize, which recognises excellence in the development of advisory work, will be presented to Gavin at SRUC’s graduation ceremony in Bute hall, University of Glasgow on Friday 11 July.

The RC Stewart Prize is named after a former President of Governors at the Edinburgh School of Agriculture (a forerunner of Scottish Agricultural College, now SRUC).

Before joining SAC Consulting in 2003 Gavin worked for Signet, gaining significant beef breeding experience. In 2007 he was promoted to Senior Beef Consultant and Team Leader of the Beef and Sheep team and, as a project manager, has led his team to consistently exceeding targeted goals. His practical down to earth approach has increased his credibility and the reputation of SAC Consulting. Earlier this year he was invited to the QMS Scottish Beef Strategy 2020 group.

Addressing the audience of graduating students, their parents, SRUC guests and colleagues gathered in the Bute Hall, Jonathan Cowens, Director of SAC Consulting said: “Gavin’s industry and technical knowledge allied to exceptional communication skills and a practical down to earth approach have done much to improve the standard of bull management and increased farmers’ ability to select the right bull for their situation. This must have added considerable value to Scotch Beef, PLC.”

Referring to Gavin’s approach he said: “He talks the farmers’ language and is particularly adept at convincing them that his point of view is correct. He can also serve up an entertaining argument when others disagree. This is a skill that should not be underestimated. You can have the best technical knowledge in the world but many lack the ability to express it in a way that truly convinces an audience.”

In recommending Gavin Hill for the RC Stewart Prize to the assembled gathering Mr Cowens said: “In addition to his Scottish work and his delivery of bull management courses, Gavin has fulfilled an extensive programme in England and Wales. It is for this impact and influence, as well his commitment to delivering the highest standards of consultancy that he is a most worthy recipient of the RC Stewart Prize in 2014.”
