Sheep Scab Detected on Norwegian Alpaca

03 February 2015

NORWAY - An outbreak of sheep scab has been detected on alpaca in South Tøndelag.

The mite Psoroptes ovis causes sheep scab, a highly contagious disease, in sheep with great economic and welfare significance.

The Veterinary Institute confirmed sheep scab after a vigilant local veterinarian found mites.

Sheep Scab is prevalent in many parts of the world, but became extinct in Norway in 1894.

Further laboratory tests are now underway to characterise the parasite genotypic.
