Australia Meets EU Sheepmeat Quota

EU – Europe’s quota of Australian sheepmeat for 2014 has been met following strong demand and lower New Zealand supply.

Exports reached 99.7 per cent of quota by the end of November, with UK lamb imports 18 per cent higher.

Overall, the value of the EU market to Australia lifted over one third at 94.1 A$million.

This is according to Meat and Livestock Australia which revealed that leg and shank accounted for 86 per cent of Australia’s biggest market.

France buying rocketed 51 per cent year on year to 1,994 tonnes.

New Zealand shipments to Europe, in contrast, dropped 6.5 per cent for 2014 up to October, stated New Zealand Meat Board figures.

An MLA spokesperson added: “Shipments to the UK dropped 9 per cent for the period, to 74,196 tonnes cwe while for Germany and Belgium declined 19 per cent and 6 per cent respectively.”
