Jobs Saved at Study Abattoir

05 December 2014

NEW ZEALAND – Jobs will be saved at a North Island abattoir after a research organisation sold an eighteen-staff facility to a specialist commercial operator.

Crown Research Institute AgResearch will be run by Wilson Hellaby, carrying on the transition of the site from being largely science based to a mostly commercial killing business.

Wilson Hellaby, currently running the country’s largest multi-species plant in Auckland, intends to maintain the Ruakura plant for trade and private customers.

AgResearch said it was pleased 17 of 18 jobs will be retained at the semi-urban site on Hamilton’s city fringe.

“We wanted to find an appropriate purchaser for the facility that would enhance the long-term viability of the operation and ensure the retention of jobs for our abattoir staff,” said AgResearch Shared Services Director Andrew McSweeney.

“Wilson Hellaby’s expertise as a specialist commercial operator will enable them to do this and further improve the facility’s operational performance and market share.”

The transaction, concluded on Monday, will raise finance for upgrading AgResearch science.
