Second Successive Record Year For Australian Exports

04 December 2014

AUSTRALIA – Australian 2014 lamb exports have already outstripped the record set last year, says Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

Total shipments abroad to the end of November hit 216,296 tonnes, over 2,500 tonnes above 2013’s volume.

A strong November saw over 19,000 tonnes shipped as demand from Australia’s main market, the Middle East, remained robust, lifting three per cent. Volumes to the US were up 19 per cent on last year.

China bought less lamb and mutton last month, although this was offset by demand for both the US, which tripled normal demand, and the Middle East which bought 59 per cent more.

Europe was a low buyer, an MLA spokesperson added.

“Lamb shipments to Papua New Guinea and the EU declined 17 per cent and 27 per cent, respectively, to 782 tonnes swt and 725 tonnes swt, while there was 12 per cent less lamb shipped to Japan during November, totalling 610 tonnes swt.”
