Emergency Bluetongue Vaccinations Reach Over 600,000

21 November 2014

SPAIN – An emergency vaccination programme has vaccinated over 680,000 animals in response to the Bluetongue virus sweeping through southern Spain.

Over 244,000 bovine and 437,000 sheep have been administered with a serotype one vaccine across Cadiz and Malaga.

Detecting the disease early has allowed control to be established, said the Andalusian Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, which acknowledged the high virulence of the strain.

Vaccination works on two doses given three to four weeks apart.

Collaboration is needed for farmers to deal with the threat, said agriculture minister Elena Vipers.
