Foot Rot High on Norwegian Agenda

13 November 2014

NORWAY – Veterinarians are leading a foot rot control campaign in Norway after a recent flare-up in the south of the country caused industry panic.

Presentations were delivered to sheep farmers and animal health experts by leading foot health experts last month.

Under the slogan, From Chaos to Control, the government and National Veterinary Institute led project aims to combat an outbreak of bacteria six years ago.

Norway had been footrot free for decades prior to detection of bacteria in Rogaland in 2008.

The National Veterinary Institute has conducted ‘several thousand’ investigations to characterise the foot rot bacterium, stressing the importance of accurate diagnosis in managing outbreaks.
