European Bluetongue Kills A Further 1600 Sheep

08 October 2014

EUROPE – Two separate serotypes of Bluetongue virus have caused hundreds of deaths on sheep farms in Italy and Greece, according to the latest disease update from the region.

A total of 379 Italian sheep and 1335 Greek sheep have been recorded dead after falling from serotypes one and four of the disease respectively.

Italian farms in central and southern regions have seen widespread outbreaks with the north spared. Greece has reported the disease across all areas.

This is according to World Organisation for Animal Health data going back to early July which included a cattle death in Romania, also hit by serotype four.

A spate of outbreaks has been reported in the south central region of Gorj, although no sheep fatalities have been recently identified.
