Middle East Hungry For Australian, Lamb, Sheep Meat

03 October 2014

AUSTRALIA – Middle East bound lamb and sheep exports leapt 32 and 168 per cent last month, with Bahrain being the only market to record lower volume than on September last year.

Lamb and sheep shipments totalled 6,100 tonnes and 4,121 tonnes shipped weight, with Jordan the largest buyer followed by UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

This is according to Department of Agriculture statistics, which revealed whole lamb carcase are still the dominant form of lamb traded.

Analysts at Meat and Livestock Australia said: “For mutton, Saudi Arabia was the largest market, with 1,526 tonnes swt, followed by the UAE, Kuwait and Oman.

“Mutton is generally frozen, in contrast to the chilled lamb trade, and whole carcases (1,921 tonnes swt) and legs (1,530 tonnes swt) accounted for 82% of the total September volume.”
