Groups Forms to Push Sheep Industry Forward

22 September 2014

ARGENTINA – A cross-sector partnership will join producers, policy makers, researchers and retailers together to make sheep production more efficient and competitive.

Through coordinating the whole supply chain and adding value, the sheep roundtable group, which met last week, hopes to direct policy to achieve government agricultural goals.

Livestock Undersecretary, Jorge Dillon, said: “This is the first meeting of the ovine table, the main idea of which is to develop public policies to improve the competitiveness of the sector.”

Describing the meeting as ‘positive’, he added that debates involving producers and institutions would inform policy.

Gerardo Colombaro, Argentinian Agrarian Federation chairman for Cordoba, said sheep farming was more cost effective in weight gain per hectare and per invested peso than other enterprises.

He added: “It is more cost effective than soybeans, dairy farming, corn or cattle if compared.”

Progress and collaboration within the sheep sector is important, he concluded.
