Japanese Demand for Australian Sheepmeat Strong This Year

JAPAN – Japan imported more lamb and mutton this August than last, as short New Zealand supplies and economic recovery supported demand.

Australian lamb totalled 690 tonnes and mutton reached 253 tonnes.

This is four and 16 per cent higher than last year, say market analysts at Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).

“While there was no change in the cut profile – Japan has predominantly been a shoulder market – chilled lamb shipments during the month increased 13 per cent year-on-year to 498 tonnes swt, and the frozen proportion eased 13 per cent to 192 tonnes sw,” an MLA analyst said.

This continues higher shipments this year, 27 per cent up on 2013 for the first eight months and the highest since 2006.

Mutton volumes for the same period are a third higher at 3,057 tonnes.
