Bluetongue Kills 300 Sheep in Bulgarian District

BULGARIA - 300 sheep have died of bluetongue disease in the Bulgarian district of Smolyan so far, Dr Valentina Melemova, head of the infectious diseases department with the District Food Safety Directorate-Smolyan said.

Quoting Radio FOCUS – Smolyan, Focus Information Agency reports that Dr Melemova said, "The number of the dead sheep a week ago was 190."

"There are also five dead cattle but we cannot tell whether the cause of death was bluetongue disease because the laboratory tests are not ready yet," the expert explained.

She commented further that not all infected animals died, since some had stronger immune system.

"Around 30 per cent of the infected animals die," Dr Melemova said, adding that no new outbreaks had been registered.
