New Zealand Lamb Exports Winding Down as Expected

20 August 2014

NEW ZEALAND – Data from July indicates New Zealand lamb and sheep meat exports fell in the run-up to the usual August lull.

Exports totalled 20,884 tonnes shipped weight last month, seven per cent down on July last year but seven per cent up on the five year average.

This is according to levy board Meat and Livestock Australia quoting Beef and Lamb New Zealand and NZX Agrifax statistics which showed exports were dwindling along with demand.

But demand is set to pick up in October when the next season commences.

July lamb shipment to the EU were 13 per cent lower year on year at 7,250 tonnes swt, mainly due to a 14 per cent drop in UK volumes as hot weather decreased demand.

China bound lamb fell eight per cent year on year at 6,537 tonnes.

However, Middle East trade was up 10 per cent on July 2013.
