Sheep Rustling Rising

15 August 2014

UK - Sheep rustling is on the rise in the UK.

According to a survey by the agricultural insurance company NFU Mutual the cost of livestock theft rose by 25 per cent last year compared to 2012.

The figures based on claims made by farmers to the insurance company make it one of the worst years on record.

The most seriously affected part of the UK for livestock theft - both sheep and cattle - was Northern Ireland.

It is also reported that the livestock thefts are now in much larger numbers with hundreds of animals being stolen rather than a few.

And concern is rising that the animals are illegally finding their way into the food chain.

Overall the cost of rural theft in the UK was estimated at £44.5 million during 2013 – a rise of 5.2 per cent, with machinery, tractors, quad bikes, garden tools, fuel and chemicals also on the list of targets by thieves.
