USDA Buys Surplus Lamb for Food Assistance

19 October 2015

US - The US Department of Agriculture has purchased 600,000 pounds of surplus lamb products valued at $3.131 million.

The lamb will be used for distribution to the child nutrition and other domestic food assistance programs for Fiscal Year 2015.

The purchase results from offers received in response to USDA’s September 18 solicitation inviting bid requests for surplus lamb removal.

Products purchased include boneless leg and shoulder roasts and shanks. Deliveries will take place between November 2015 and June 2016.

With this purchase, USDA has transitioned more than one million pounds of lamb product from storage to be used in federal food nutrition assistance programs.
