French Farmer Protests Add to Sheep Imports Slide

26 August 2015

FRANCE – Road blockades and trade disruptions around Calais have exacerbated a general trend of declining sheep meat demand in France.

Protests over imported food this summer have seen imports down seven per cent at 47,000 tonnes for the first half of the year.

However, the value per unit of French imports lifted slightly, softening the decline in import value, which fell four per cent to €236.1 million.

An Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board spokesperson said: “Overall declining volumes were seen both in the first and second quarters of the year, although the falls were sharper in the second quarter.

“The majority of sheep meat imported by France came in the form of carcases, with 52 per cent of the total volume coming in this form, one point higher than the same period in 2014.

“The largest fall in shipments to France came from Ireland, with volumes down 10 per cent at 7,600 tonnes on the back of lower Irish sheep meat production in the first half of the year. Falls were also seen in imports from New Zealand and Spain, down by three per cent and 10 per cent respectively.”
