Swedish Farmers Call for Action on Wolf Attacks

24 August 2015

SWEDEN – Swedish farming organisations have thrown their weight behind producer pleas for government assistance to address wolf attacks on sheep.

A farming union member has demanded the government should to pay for wolf control, blaming policy measures on a flare-up of attacks.

This was the plea of Federation of Swedish Farmers (LRF) board member, Sven Erik Hammar, who added: “predator pressure should not be high to make it impossible to keep domestic animals”.

Passionate discussions involving the LRF and the Swedish Association of Sheep Farming have developed following the Stockholm County Administrative Board Decision overruled an application for “protective hunting” of wolves.

An LRF spokesperson said: “This is fundamentally important for LRF, so we want to move the focus from the individual farm and pursue the issue of culling across the union.

“It's a tough situation you find yourself in, and we have taken to contacting the media.”
