Stop Lamb Price Cuts, Irish Factories Told

02 July 2015

IRELAND – An Irish farmers’ group has called on lamb processors to stabilise the lamb market by stopping price cuts.

Irish Farmers’ Association chairman John Liskey said “severe cuts” of 40-50 cents per kilo had inflicted “acute damage” on sheep producers over the past week.

Fresh from a meeting in Brussels on Monday, he said the IFA would, along with UK and French colleagues, work closely to ensure the market is not undermined with cheap lamb.

He said: “Sheep farmers are very dependent on lamb price for their incomes and many producers selling lambs to date have incurred high costs with meal feeding.

“It is of vital importance that lamb prices are stabilised and maintained at viable levels to maintain confidence in the sector.”
