Irish Farmer Calls for Responsible Dog Ownership

29 June 2015

IRELAND – A sheep industry leader has called for responsible dog ownership in light of the latest dog attack on sheep.

Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) sheep chairman, John Brooks, urged walkers to ensure dogs were secure at all times in response to pedigree Zwartble sheep being “brutally attacked” recently.

Eight ewes and a ram eventually died from a dog attack on an ICSA member’s farm in County Cork.

Mr Brooks said: "All dogs, from cherished family pets to prized working dogs, can potentially cause serious distress and damage if they are not kept under control. Sheep are completely defenceless, and it is absolutely vital that we do all we can to protect them from attack.

"I would call on all dog owners to ensure that they do their duty and keep their dogs under control at all times to avoid these horrible scenes."
