Sheep Insemination Success Reduces Import Dependence

28 May 2015

MEXICO – Mexican sheep imports have fallen over 80 per cent, something the government is linking to a rise in artificial insemination and higher productivity.

Artificial insemination has influenced productivity in a sector with “encouraging prospects”, inseminating 100,000 sheep in 2014 and rising, says the ministry of agriculture.

The government predicts inseminations to rise to 120,000 this year, against a long term downward trend in sheep imports.

Since 2002, sheepmeat imports fell from 60,000 tons to 11,000 tons, according to government figures.

A spokesman for the ministry said there was growing demand for sheepmeat on the grounds that it provides consumers with a lean, high protein source.
