Chile Region Maedi Visna Free

19 May 2015

CHILE – A sheep producing region of southern Chile has beaten the costly Maedi Visna virus.

Official clarification has been granted to the Aysen district after a fifteen year battle with the virus, says the Ministry of Agriculture (SAG).

Introduced by imported sheep from Spain in 2000, Maedi Visna has prompted extensive historical flock records and epidemiological surveillance to ensure Aysen met World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) standards.

Angel Satori, livestock service national director, said the infection has a profound impact on sheep and production.

He said: “It negatively effects many relevant economic parameters including reproductive rates, lamb birthweights, lamb mortality, ewe longevity and lambing percentage.”

The announcement follows news of a bovine brucellosis free status change and further strengthens the region’s livestock credentials, according to regional SAG director, Julio Cerda.

“This can result in economic growth towards the regional export of bovine animals and sheep,” he explained.

"There has been a very important 15 year period of investment, we have accelerated work during period, ensuring all records would allow the Central SAG to issue this resolution.”
