Carryover Lambs Boost Sheepmeat Output

23 April 2015

UK - First quarter lamb production rose in the UK this year, helping to push sheepmeat production to a thirteen year high, say EBLEX analysts.

Lamb slaughter advanced 11 per cent lifting sheep output to 69,300 tonnes, due largely to high volumes carried over from last year’s lamb crop.

This is the highest first quarter sheepmeat production since 2002.

Referring to the December stock census, EBLEX said: “The increased number of lambs carried over into production in early 2015 was driven by the well documented higher lamb crop and excellent conditions throughout much of the 2014/15 production year.”

Clean sheep slaughterings have been at high levels but adult sheep figures have slumped to depths not seen for “quite some time”, EBLEX added.

“The increased production is also a factor of higher carcase weights. At 20.1kg, clean sheep weights are up two per cent, or 400g, compared to the year earlier and are well above averages normally seen in Q1.

“This is as a result of good seasonal conditions, high forage availability and relatively cheap prices for bought in feed.

“In contrast, at 27.0kg, average carcase weights of adult sheep were back two per cent, or 700g, on the level seen in 2014.”
