Auction Sales Up Fourth Year Running

02 April 2015

UK – Farmers are “voting with their feet” and bringing more sheep to livestock markets, according to the Livestock Auctioneers Association.

Tickets from sheep sales have shown four years of growth, with 200,000 more sheep through markets last year than in 2013.

Prime slaughter sheep also increased from 7.244 million to 7.287 million.

Chris Dodds, executive secretary of the LAA said it showed the livestock system is as “crucial as ever” to British farming, despite “many challenges” facing the markets.

He said: “The extra 200,000 sheep that were sold through auction marts last year will have experienced modern handling facilities staffed by well-trained drovers.

“And they will have been purchased by people who could stand round the ring able to choose exactly what they want to buy."

He has urged farmers considering retailer or abattoir direct supply agreements to think again.

“With major multiple retailers struggling to maintain sales, direct contracts might not be the best way for farmers to secure a long-term sustainable business.”
