With more intensive laming regimes, the incidence of Coccidiosis has increased. There are a total of 15 coccidia that can affect sheep. The two main pathogenic species that affect sheep in the UK are Eimeria ovinoidalis and Eimeria crandallis.

The disease is caused by the Eimeria parasite invading the intestinal cells of the sheep and slow the lamb’s growth rate and result in later finsishing.

Lambs of four to seven weeks of age are most affected.

The Eimeria only affect sheep and do not affect goats.
